State and National Issues

Your voice does make a difference!  The Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) is active in Washington, D.C., working to keep melanoma awareness a high priority with elected officials and to encourage their support of research funding.

You can help change the landscape for melanoma by personally telling your Congressional delegation how they can combat the fastest growing cancer in the United States.  Specifically, you can ask them to:

  • Become a co-sponsor of H.R. 4520 – the Tanning Bed Cancer Control Act of 2010
  • Support a request for $10 million for melanoma research through the Department of Defense in the Fiscal 2011 Defense Appropriations bill
  • Urge the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to increase regulation of indoor tanning devices, as well as mandate stronger warning labels

You can influence state and federal policy makers!  To find the name and contact information for your Senators and Representative, visit http://capwiz.com/skincancerprevention/home/.  You will also find an easy form to use to send an e-mail.

Whether you choose to send a letter, fax, e-mail or make a phone call, the most important thing is that they hear from you.

Melanoma is the leading cause of new cancer diagnoses, and new therapeutic strategies are urgently needed.  The Committees on Appropriations of the House of Representatives and the Senate asked the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to provide a report on the steps it’s taken to find new treatments for melanoma.  The report details the NCI’s efforts to find better options for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
