Nobody has ever accused me of being at a loss for words. Ever. But I got awfully close to speechless when I saw the story of a New Jersey mom arrested for putting her daughter into a tanning booth at a salon. Many of the facts around the story are in dispute, though nobody is contradicting what the school nurse saw. A little girl with a serious sunburn. The girl told the nurse that her mom took her tanning. The story is as sad as it is outrageous. The mother clearly has a wildly distorted self-image, blind to her own shocking appearance. It’s distressing to see someone quite nearly... More >>

In a reversal of what has become something of a national trend, the Idaho State Senate rejected a bill passed by the House that would have prohibited children under the age of 16 from going to indoor tanning salons, and required parental permission for children aged 16 and 17.  Idaho, meanwhile, has the highest melanoma rates in the country. My first response is outrage and incredulity, but beyond that, I am intensely curious.  What motivates a group of, presumably, intelligent men and women to make this kind of decision?  We know that UV lamps are carcinogenic.  We... I read the report from Congress’ House Energy and Commerce Committee with great interest.  They used interns to call 300 tanning salons—at least 3 in each state and the District of Columbia—and asked salon staff questions about tanning safety.  Presenting themselves as a 16 year old girl with blond hair and fair skin, they asked if tanning was dangerous and how much they could tan. To understand the significance of these questions, it is important to remember a few facts: The World Health Organization has classified tanning beds as a carcinogen, in the same... More >>

He was not what you would expect to see at an NFL game.  It wasn’t the way he was dressed.  After all, people put on the wackiest clothes for a game.  He had on the team shirt, was dressed in the team colors.  It was more the expression on his face—a look of deep concern, of worry. Last weekend, the MRF held a Melanoma Awareness Day in partnership with the Jacksonville Jaguars in their match-up against the Cincinnati Bengals.  We put out 50,000 stadium cups with the phrase, “Make a Great Catch!  Spotting melanoma early can save a life!”... When someone is diagnosed with cancer, they have a lot of questions.  The first question, as I mentioned recently, is this:  “Am I going to die?”  But another common question follows after that.  “How did this happen?” Cancer patients often feel regret.  What if I had quit smoking?  What if my diet had been healthier?  What if I had gotten my mammogram sooner?  Guilt and regret, while understandable (and, to some extent, unavoidable) are not productive in walking the cancer journey. “How did this happen?”  The...
