Off-Topic Forum

The MPIP Off-Topic Forum is a community bulletin board that provides the melanoma community with a safe space to share experiences and to give and find support from others who can relate to having or caring for someone with a melanoma diagnosis. Please note: if you have an urgent question about melanoma to ask the community, visit the main MPIP Forum.

MPIP is the oldest and largest community of people affected by melanoma hosted through the Melanoma Research Foundation. It is designed to provide support and information to caregivers, patients, family and friends. Once you have been touched by melanoma—either as a patient or as a family member or friend of a patient—you become part of a community. It is not a community anyone joins willingly. But if you must be part of this group, you will find no better place to find the tools you need in your journey with this cancer, and the friends who can make that journey more bearable.

The information on the bulletin board is open and accessible to everyone. To add a new topic or to post a reply, you must be a registered user. Please note that you will be able to post both topics and replies anonymously even though you are logged in. All posts must abide by MRF posting policies.

I am sure this has probably been discussed, but I have not seen the threads. I used to get email updates on new posts, or comments that were new on previous posts. Ids this still an option, and if so, how do I subscribe once again? I have not followed through on some posts, and I feel badly about that - the responses fell through the cracks during periods I was not frequenting the board.

Any help is appreciated...thanks!

My heart is shattered and I can't stop the tears.  I just read Cigar Bob's post on facebook.  I just can't believe it. It hurts so damn bad.  I can't imagine how Bob is feeling.

Dian was so intelligent, encouraged and inspired everyone on this board and others, loved and played and sang her beloved blues and bluegrass music, was such a beautiful lady, inside and out, and she was my friend, and a friend to many all over the world.

I'll always love you, dear sweet Dian, and we're all going to miss you terribly. Rest in peace, Dian.  You fought one helluva fight, all the way to the end; it's time to rest now.

I'm writting my paper and need to extract some paragraph out of pdf materials, but the pdf can not be copied, so I need to tranfer them to word so that I can use them freely. Any idea to do that? Do I have to use a software or any tools?

Hello, MRF members and users,

I had a biopsy of a mole on my ankle on 11/18, and it was diagnosed as a displastic nevi on 11/21. The doctor's office called me on that day to schedule surgery to remove the remaining mole on 11/26. I underwent the surgery on that day. I am concerned about the aggressiveness of the treatment. The doctor removed a significant area around the mole and sent it off to be analyzed.

From my research, I haven't seen displastic nevi handled in such an aggressive manner. I go back on 12/8 to have the stitiches removed, so I can pose my questions to the doctor at that time, but does anyone have any suggestions as to what questions (other than the obvious, "Is it melanoma?") I should be asking? Are there stages to displastic nevi that warrant aggressive action and concern? I appreciate your suggestions and opinions, and I thank you all in advance for your attention to my question and concerns.

Has anyone else seen the episode where she does reading at a Melanoma fundraiser?

Hoped a few Melanoma Angels would have come through.

Hopefully she'll continue to spread awareness & raise funds!

Love her!

A month ago I was diagnosed with stage I melanoma on my left leg. 0.82mm deep, no ulceration, <1/mm mitotic rate. I have a WLE and a sentinel node biopsy scheduled for this Monday (in 3 days). The same time as I found out I have melanoma, I found out that I am expecting my first baby!!!! I am very scared. I'm scared of everything... that it can hurt my baby, that pregnancy can "activate" more melanomas, that it can come back later....

Does anybody out there is or was in a similar situation? I would really want to hear about your experience.

Seems like this is a good place for this topic to be addressed.

Hi I'm new to this site so not sure if this is the right place to voice my concerns but I hope you can help. I'm a 28yr old female and for the last year at least I have had a small flat brown mole on the sole of my foot. However recently I have noticed it has grown slightly and has a small white area in the middle of it. Should I be worried? I mentioned it to a nurse practioner a few weeks ago and she just said keep an eye on it? I should also mention my grandad had skin cancer at a young age and that I'm a very fair redhead! Any advice would be great thanks x

On September 22, 2013 the “7th Annual Miles for Melanoma New Jersey” event takes place at Ginty Field, Morris Township, New Jersey; it’s a 5K run or I mile walk.  NYU has a team, “NYU Fights Melanoma” and you can join it.  You can get to the event through the MRF site or go directly using this link.

Hi everybody!

Meredith and I are starting what will hopefully be an annual event, maybe we will even get more people to join us as the years go on.  This year we are going to be in an event that raises money for cancer by making us walk 5k around Yankee stadium.  Thats right, all of the stairs and a lap around the field,  You can donate on either one of our pages,

My wife is

mine is

If anybody would like to join in with us, you can create your own team, or join ours, (blackmoles).  Just watch out for all of the syringes from A-rod when you pass 3rd base.-you might even get to watch me being passed by a grandma and a little girl since I only have 1 lung and my left leg coordination is all screwy from the brain surgeries I've had.  The great thing about Damon Runyon, is that it doesn't raise money for any specific cancer research it gives grants based on the best researchers for all different types of cancer.  Jedd Wolchok(our oncologist), of Memorial Sloan Kettering once received one of these grants and that turned into a new and better FDA approved treatment for melanoma. (Yervoy)

The first 10 donors get a shamwow, and especially big donors will get a PBS tote bag with a Ken Burns CD collection.  Donate within the next 10 minutes and we will even throw in a Slapchop!

Best to everybody and back to the more serious matters at hand  which is you doing your best to kill the beast.

As for updates on me, I'm 5 years out with no evidence of disease 40 years old (was especially happy to make it to 40, as that made it 10 years since my diagnosis (30th birthday).  Meredith and I have a son named Jedd, he is now 15 months old and already much more mature than his father.

Meredith and I run a successful mobile veterinary business, and my current treatments are just daily antiseizure medication which I am currently weaning off of.  I thank God for the gift of life every single day.

God Bless everybody in their battle
