As I approach my one year anniversary since my diagnosis, I still can't believe it happened to me! I am a child if the 70's. The first time the sun came out after a long New England winter, I would slather baby oil all over me, head up to the roof of my house and get my base tan (burn). I spent my summers on Crystal Lake in Harrison, Maine at our lake house - spending all day in the sun.
As I got older, I discovered the tanning bed. At first I just tanned before a dance or vacation. But then I tanned durind the winter, I was addicted.
In November of 2012, I went to a local dermatologist. I had what I thought was an age spot and had developed a new dark freckle on my nose. The dermatologist removed them but unfortunately did not send them off to pathology. I assumed all was well.
Last June, the "age spot" came back. I went back to the dermatologist, had another biopsy, and received a call the next morning. Hearing the words I will never forget, "YOU HAVE MELANOMA!"
I lost most of my nose to the BEAST. I've had MOHS surgery 3 times and then reconstructive forehead flap. Unfortunately, the hospital made a grave error and stated that my margins were clear and they were not! I underwent radiation. To date I have had 8 surgeries!!!
I am blessed to be alive! I am blessed to now have an amazing team of doctors!
