Melanoma Research Foundation’s Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MRF?
The Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was founded in 1996 by Diana Ashby, a melanoma patient who was frustrated by the ineffectiveness of current medical treatments for melanoma and wanted to make a difference. Since Diana’s death, the MRF has grown into the largest independent, national organization devoted to melanoma in the United States. Please visit the history section to learn more.
What does the MRF do?
The MRF is dedicated to funding medical research for finding effective treatments and eventually a cure. We strive to educate patients and physicians about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of melanoma; and we are an advocate for the melanoma community to raise the awareness of this disease and the need for a cure.
How can I make a donation MRF?
Visit our Make a Donation page for information on how you can support us.
If I make a donation in memory or in honor of someone, will the family be notified?
Yes, you will receive an acknowledgment from us, thanking you for your gift, and the family will receive notification that a donation has been made in their loved-one’s name to the MRF. This notification will include the donor’s name and address, but not the gift amount.
How can I become a volunteer?
Visit our Melanoma Messengers page for information on how to become a volunteer. There are many opportunities available, from advocacy work to organizing a fundraising event.
How much of my donation will go directly to research and education?
The MRF is one of the most financially responsible organizations in the country. In 2008, 51 percent of our annual budget went directly to research, and 34 percent was dedicated to education. In fact, the MRF earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the highest rating from the nation’s largest and most-utilized independent evaluator of charities. The MRF is the only organization devoted to melanoma in the United States to receive a 4-star rating.
Does the MRF provide financial assistance to patients?
Since advancing treatment options for melanoma by funding research is the MRF’s primary focus, we are unable to offer financial assistance to patients. However, there are several organizations that do provide this service. We would be happy to make a suggestion and try to match you with the best possible resource. Please call our office at (800) 673-1290 to speak with someone who can assist you or visit our Patient Reference Guide.
