Anyone know how bone mets are detected??? Is there a scan for bone mets??? Which scans can pick up bone mets (ie:PET?CT?)
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.
There is a scan that is just for bone mets. I had it done years ago and the issue ended up being totally unrelated. My mel oncologist at the time ordered the scan.
I'm not sure which of the other scans pick up bone mets but I would think that the PET, CT or MRI would all pick them up.
I had a bone scan (not a bone density scan for osteoporosis) a couple of years ago when an abnormality of my fifth rib was picked up on a CT scan. It was in fact a fractured rib, but it was not melanoma.
A bone scan is a nuclear scanning test that identifies new areas of bone growth or breakdown. It can be done to evaluate damage to the bones, find cancer that has spread (metastasized) to the bones, and monitor conditions that can affect the bones (including infection and trauma).
I saw some very small studies, around 100 comparions between Bone scans and PET/CT scans. PET/CT scans can pick up bone cancer but with more false positives.
I had a bone scan about two months ago with another in a month. The first scan was clean from bone cancer.
