The MRF is hosting its first ever Peer Support Group Facilitator training! The role of the volunteer facilitator is to provide a safe, caring and sharing environment where patients/caregivers can express themselves. MRF peer support groups DO NOT consist of counseling or therapy and our objective is not to “fix” group members.

This 16-hour training will be held August 20th and 21st. The first day will be combined with the Phone Buddy training which will focus on the “soft” skills like active listening, learning how to reserve judgment and how to understand the difference between a helping relationship and a friendship. The second day is mandatory for anyone signed up to become a facilitator. During this session, you will learn facilitation principles and skills like understanding group dynamics, group structure and process to ensure an effective support group meeting.

Lived experience as either a survivor or a caregiver is a must. You should be at least 13 months out from diagnosis and your health must be stable. Caregivers who have experienced a loss must meet similar criteria. No experience as a facilitator is needed, however, empathetic listening skills are.

The MRF asks you to commit to a period of one year for this volunteer opportunity.

The MRF will covering the cost of hotel rooms and will be providing a limited amount of travel scholarships to those who wish to participate. Please contact [email protected] for more information.
