Peer-to-Peer Phone Buddy Training (West Coast)

The MRF's Peer-to-Peer Phone Buddy program trains volunteers to provide melanoma patients and their families with non-professional emotional support and linkage to important resources. This program was designed to meet the unique needs and challenges faced by newly diagnosed patients. We are expanding the program and are looking for volunteers in the western part of the United States to participate in our Los Angeles training. This two day training will provide you with the tools you need to be a good Buddy, while looking after yourself and maintaining healthy boundaries.

  • Experience with melanoma, either as a patient or a caregiver
  • If you are a patient, you must be in a stable place of coping with your disease—emotionally and physically--and at least one year out from your diagnosis
  • If you are a caregiver, you must be at least 12 months out from the loss of your loved one
  • Good coping skills and effective strategies for handling stress
  • A support network of your own
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Acceptance of individual differences and a willingness to learn from the beliefs and values of others
  • Awareness that you are not serving as a medical expert or professional counselor
  • Willingness to take direction from MRF staff
  • Healthy personal boundaries
  • Access to a telephone (land line or a mobile phone)

The MRF will cover the cost of hotel accommodations and may be able to assist with travel costs. Space is extremely limited. For more information, and to register, contact Mary Antonucci, National Director of Volunteer Services at
